García Leads Illinois Members in Letter Condemning Israeli Settler Violence in West Bank Village

October 1, 2026 Press Release CHICAGO — Congressman Jesús “Chuy” García (IL-04) led his colleagues Congresswoman Delia Ramirez (IL-03), Congressmen Mike Quigley (IL-05), and Jonathan Jackson (IL-01) in a letter to the U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee, condemning the violence by Israeli settlers, police and military in the village of al-Mughayyir in the occupied West Bank. The legislators, who represent several constituents with relatives living in the village, are calling attention to the alarming situation where recently five Palestinian residents under the age of 20 were killed, others including a nine-year old boy have been shot, and food, basic needs and even education have been restricted. “They have destroyed homes, businesses, and farms, uprooted thousands of olive trees, stolen livestock, blocked food and other necessary supplies from entering the village, and devastated the entire local economy,” state the Members of Congress in the letter. “Those residents who are not murdered by Israeli forces are condemned to a horrific existence marked by poverty, deprivation, and terror.” “This is not an isolated situation; it reflects an intentional policy of violence and terrorism inflicted by Israeli forces across the occupied West Bank to further the ethnic cleansing and genocide of the Palestinian people,” continues the letter. “Shamefully, the U.S. government has consistently backed this policy by continuing to provide military aid to Israel and failing to act to stop these rampant attacks. This is morally unconscionable and directly affects the U.S. citizens who live in al-Mughayyir or who (like several of our constituents) have relatives that live there.” The Members urged Ambassador Huckabee to visit al-Mughayyir, hold a town hall with its residents, and specify concrete actions the U.S. government will take to intervene with the Israeli government. “At minimum, the Administration should follow the lead of our allies and impose sanctions and a trade ban on settlements, but much more is required to end our government’s longstanding support of the mass atrocities committed against the Palestinian people,” demand the Members of Congress in the letter.
