Following Significant Advocacy from U.S. Senator Britt, U.S. House Passes Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026, Legislation Heads to President Trump’s Desk

WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Senator Katie Britt (R-Ala.) today joined several of her colleagues to celebrate the U.S. House of Representatives passing the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026 . The legislation was passed by a 262-159 vote and will now head to President Trump’s desk where it is expected to be signed into law. Senator Britt played a key role in the successful passage of the legislation, including in the Senate where it passed overwhelmingly by a vote of 86-11 on August 7, 2026. “As my colleague and dear friend Senator Lindsey Graham said in his final days, the ability to pass this bill and sanction Russia and Iran would be his most consequential legislative accomplishment. Now, named in his honor, I am thrilled to celebrate the House passing the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026 and sending it to President Trump’s desk to be signed into law. We are now one step closer to arming President Trump with the tools he needs to deplete Russia of the little economic power it has left and bring much-needed peace to the region,” said Senator Britt. Following House passage, Senator Britt joined a bipartisan, bicameral group of legislators for a press conference in which she delivered remarks . “Today, I am grateful for the House continuing the efforts that began in the Senate with Senator Lindsey Graham. Thank you. God Bless.” The Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026 would impose primary and secondary sanctions against Russia and actors supporting Russia’s war in Ukraine. The sanctions target Russian officials, oligarchs, their family members, foreign persons, and Russian banks and financial institutions, as well as the Russian Shadow Fleet. The legislation also directs the President to impose up to 100 percent tariffs on the five largest importers of Russian crude oil or gas or are among the top five facilitators of Russian oil sanctions evasion. The bill exempts countries whose Russian natural gas imports account for less than 15 percent of Russia’s total natural gas exports and that are taking significant steps to reduce those imports. Additionally, the legislation extends the Iran Sanctions Act by five years to prevent a lapse in sanction authority that restricts funding for Iran’s energy and weapons sectors.
