Sen. Ossoff Helps Pass Bipartisan Bill into Law to Lower Drug Costs for Georgians

Washington, D.C.— U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff helped pass a bipartisan bill into law to lower drug costs for Georgians.
Sen. Ossoff worked with Republicans and Democrats to pass theIncreasing Transparency in Generic Drug Applications Actto increase transparency in generic drug applications and reduce unnecessary delays so that these low-cost medications are brought to consumers faster.
The bipartisan bill, which became law on February 3 as part of bipartisan government funding legislation, will streamline the drug review process of generic drug applicants by requiring the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to disclose to generic drug applicants what ingredients causes a drug to be different and the same from brand-name drugs. By doing so, the bill will make generic drugs –– which are lower-cost alternatives –– more available to those in need.
According to theAssociation for Accessible Medicine, the bill’s passage would “save the U.S. healthcare system more than $800 million over 10 years and bring lower-cost medicines to patients sooner.”
“Georgians deserve alternatives to expensive name-brand medications. This new law will help hold big pharma accountable and promote stronger competition for more affordable prescription drugs,”said Sen. Ossoff.

In 2023, Sen. Ossoffhelped advancea package of bipartisan legislation — bringing together Democrats and Republicans to pass a fleet of bills dedicated to reducing these burdensome prescription drug costs for Georgians.
In 2022, Sen. Ossoffhelped pass into lawa bill that forced drug companies to negotiate lower prescription drug costs with Medicare, and lower costs for 10 drugs went into effect as of January 1, 2026.
