Congressman Thompson Joins Mississippi Delegation in Celebrating Vicksburg National Military Park Bill Signing
October 21, 2026 Press Release Washington, D.C. – Today, Congressman Bennie G. Thompson (MS-02) joined members of the Mississippi Congressional Delegation in celebrating the signing of the Vicksburg National Military Park Boundary Modification Act into law. The legislation, introduced by Congressman Thompson in the U.S. House of Representatives, allows the State of Mississippi to move forward with plans for a new visitor center and related improvements at Vicksburg National Military Park. The House approved the legislation on March 16, 2026, followed by unanimous Senate passage. The new law makes a limited adjustment to the park’s boundaries, allowing the state to develop an interactive educational and visitor center and construct a connector road to improve access for visitors. “Vicksburg National Military Park tells an important part of Mississippi’s story,” said Congressman Thompson. “This legislation will help ensure that future generations have the opportunity to learn about the Siege of Vicksburg, the impact of the Civil War on the people of this region, and the role of United States Colored Troops in the campaign.” The State of Mississippi has committed $40 million toward the development of the new visitor center in partnership with Friends of Vicksburg National Military Park. The project is expected to expand educational opportunities, improve the visitor experience, and support tourism and economic activity in the region.
