Daines, Sheehy, Downing, Zinke Urge Interior Secretary to Help Montana Prepare for the Battle of Little Bighorn’s 150th Anniversary Celebrations
U.S. SENATE –U.S. Senators Steve Daines and Tim Sheehy, along with Representatives Troy Downing (MT-02) and Ryan Zinke (MT-01), today sent a letter to Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum asking for support in preparation of the 150thanniversary of the Battle of Little Bighorn celebrations that will take place this June at the Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument near Crow Agency, Montana.
The Battle of Little Bighorn will be commemorated from June 25thto June 27thwith special programs and activities honoring the sacrifices made on June 25 and June 26, 1876, when Lakota, Cheyenne, and Arapaho warriors fought the U.S. Army’s 7thCavalry under the command of Lieutenant Colonel George Custer with support of scouts from the Crow Nation.
“As one of the most significant battles in Montana’s history, the 150thanniversary is expected to draw thousands of visitors as well as substantial press. Given the anticipated attendance and heightened visibility, it is imperative that adequate law enforcement resources are in place to ensure public safety and the smooth execution of these commemorative events. In addition to sufficient law enforcement presence, increased funding for the Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument will be critical to successfully hosting the 150thanniversary events….We respectfully urge the National Park Service and the Department of the Interior to ensure the completion of the visitor center and to provide the additional funding and security necessary to support the 150thanniversary remembrance events for the Battle of Little Bighorn,”they wrote in the letter.
