Expanding career tech across Ohio

Dear friends and neighbors, Ohio’s future depends on preparing the next generation with the skills they need to succeed, and a traditional college pathway isn’t always what’s best for every student. As Ohio’s lieutenant governor, I worked to expand career and technical education across our state, providing students and schools with the resources they needed to be ready to join the workforce. As your U.S. Senator, I helped pass the Working Families Tax Cuts Act, which will help schools create more short-term training opportunities for students. Today, those investments are paying off. I recently visited the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center (MCCTC), where educators, students, and alumni shared how expanded career tech opportunities are preparing more Ohioans for in-demand careers and helping employers build the workforce they need. Hearing from Ohioans MCCTC Superintendent John Zehentbauer shared the school received an $11.4 million grant through Ohio’s career tech expansion initiative, something I worked towards as lieutenant governor, allowing the center to build a new facility and purchase modern equipment. The expansion will open this fall with 100 new student spots , giving more students access to hands-on career training after years of turning applicants away. I am especially proud the Working Families Tax Cuts Act is helping create additional short-term training opportunities, giving students even more pathways to earn valuable credentials and prepare for in-demand careers. Career tech graduates are already seeing the benefits. Robert, a career tech alumnus and business owner, said career tech education gave him the foundation to start one of only four companies in the United States using a specialized manufacturing process. Ben, a 2026 graduate, shared how career tech education helped him pursue electrical engineering, operate his own business, and build a future in cybersecurity. MCCTC’s stories are just one example of what’s possible when we invest in students, expand access to career tech education, and give schools the resources they need to prepare the next generation of Ohio’s workforce. Whether students go straight into the workforce, continue their education, or start a business of their own, I want every Ohioan to have the chance to build a successful future right here at home.
